Building Management Challenges

Managing a building can be a real challenge. You need to make sure the environment is not only comfortable but also safe. The area’s are also quite diverse from energy consumption to fire safety. Smart buildings are the concept of using technology to make them more efficient and also able to self diagnose and alert building managers of potential issues.

As in all jobs it would be better to spend more time analyzing on how we can improve the building then collecting the information. Imagine having a dashboard that is continually updating showing you the status of the building at any given time. Saving you the need to physically go to sites just to know if everything is ok or not.

Smart Lighting

Smart lighting features can give you the ability to report on current usage. You can control the lights remotely to turn them on or off. They can be connected to other systems such as motion sensors to only turn on when people are in the area. The lights can even be used in digital art displays to really give your area some personality.

Waste Management

One of the biggest spends for governments in particular is waste management costs. Up until now garbage collection consisted of trucks going out and picking the bins up on a regular schedule. This meant even if a bin was empty the truck would still have to go out wasting time and resources. There are now sensors which will detect fill level and send that data back to a central database allowing for more intelligent pick up schedules.

Smart Water

Water is one of those fundamentals of life so it is very important we protect it and use it wisely. The smart water concept allows technology to be used to monitor usage, quality and issues in the supply of water.

We have touched on a few areas where technology can be used to make a building managers life much easier. Making sure our buildings are designed to be smart buildings are going to be one of the most important design considerations going forward for governments.

Some of the other areas that is worth looking at is solar power for buildings, smart art, .smart metering and smart parks. As part of our consultation we can do an audit of your buildings and out door spaces to see what technology is right for you.
